PSAT Scholars Program 2014

PROGRAM IS FREE OF CHARGE

  • For students in the Class of 2016 (sophomores/10th graders)
  • Sessions are on Saturdays (mandatory attendance required on all six Saturdays)
  • Students will learn about the PSAT/SAT that they will be required to take their junior year
  • During previous programs, the average student improved his/her SAT score by over 150 points
  • Students will receive free test preparation materials and instruction; this course normally costs $695

2014 FACES Scholarship Program

FACES is dedicated to fostering diversity and community involvement. Our Scholarship Program is one of the many ways we achieve these goals by offering college financial assistance to our aspiring scholars. This award is intended for graduating High School Seniors who plan to pursue a college degree from a 2 or 4-year Community College or University within the United States. 10 deserving students will be awarded one-time scholarships of $1,000-$3,000.

Karangalan Scholarship

Karangalan is a Tagalog word that means, “pride, dignity, and honor. The Karangalan Scholarship, sponsored by the friends and family of the Filipino educators of the Sweetwater Union High School District, will be awarded to outstanding Filipino American senior students in the Sweetwater Union High School District who have demonstrated excellence in academics and community involvement.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Be a high school senior of Filipino/Filipino-American descent enrolled in the Sweetwater Union High School District.
Have a minimum 3.0 college weighted GPA
Have applied to a 4 year college/university as a full-time student


Scholarship recipients will be selected according to the following criteria:

1. Academic achievement 30%

2. Leadership, Extracurricular & community involvement

activities 25%

3. 2 letters of recommendation

(One letter must be from an educator, the other letter from a community member not related to the applicant.) 25%

4. Written essay 20%

The scholarship awards will range from $200 to $500. Applicants must submit a complete application, a typed essay, two letters of recommendation, and an official transcript, all postmarked by April 11, 2014. Applications will be screened by the Scholarship Committee. Finalists will be notified and awarded at their school sites respective awards ceremony.

UCSD Young Physicists Program

The young physicists program has been a staple of the UCSD Physics department's outreach to area middle and high school students.  The program is designed provide area students with a chance spend a morning learning about important concepts in physics through the use of demonstrations (such as tesla coils, vacuum cannons, and more), hands on labs, and lectures from current UCSD faculty and researchers.  Following the program, students are provided with pizza and soda.

This Saturday (March 8th) we'll be learning about geometric optics and waves. Students will be able to build (and keep!) their own simple telescopes and learn about the wave behavior in sound, light, and slinkys.

UCSD requires that participants in outreach programs associated with the university fill out a waver once a year.  This waver can be found here http://ypp.ucsd.edu/waivers/waiver.pdf.

What to do if you are COMPACT for SUCCESS But Denied Admissions to SDSU

What do you do if you are COMPACT for SUCCESS but denied admissions to SDSU?

You need to submit an appeal. To submit an appeal, carefully read and follow the six steps below:

1.  Meet with your school counselor to identify what Compact benchmarks you have not satisfied and come up with a plan to meet all the benchmarks by your high school graduation.

2.  Visit the SDSU appeals website at sdsu.edu/appeals<http://sdsu.edu/appeals> and download the Admission Appeal Request Form<http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/pdf/Admissions_Appeal_Request.pdf>.

3.  Prepare documentation.  In order for your appeal to be complete, you must include an appeal package with the following:

  *The Admissions Appeal Request (download PDF, print, and complete form)
  *Letter of appeal detailing which of the compact benchmarks you have now satisfied that make you newly eligible for admission (e.g., GPA, English remediation, math remediation).  If you have a serious and compelling circumstance that you feel the appeals committee should consider, you will need to provide supporting documentation.
  *Official high school transcript
  *Proof of completion of compact benchmarks (i.e. ELM/EPT/SAT/ACT scores, EAP results, final high school transcript with spring 2014 grades.
 * Incomplete appeals will not be reviewed until remaining documents are submitted and processed.

4.  Submit your appeal.  Mail the complete appeals package to:

5.  Allow time for processing.  Appeal decisions will be provided in June or July.

6.  Receive the decision by mail.  Applicants will be notified of appeals decision by mail using the address on file in the SDSU Office of Admissions.


The appeals website states that applicants have over 30 days from the "deny" notification to submit an appeal.  Please note that SDSU will continue to accept and review appeals from Compact students after this date.  Complete appeals must be submitted on our before the date of the applicant's high school graduation.

Career Day - THANK YOU!

On behalf of the SUHi Counseling Team, I’d like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to our entire staff for helping with Friday’s Career Day!

THANK YOU to our dozens of career speakers who came to meet with our students. We had such a great group of people participate! Having met all of our speakers, our students have had an invaluable experience in learning more about their career interests. Seeing students interact and ask lots questions of the professionals was so rewarding to our counseling team. We look forward to working with you all again in the future! During the registration and reception in the morning, it was a bit overwhelming having over 80 career speakers in the library. Lots of suits and ties, doctor scrubs, military uniforms, and more! 
THANK YOU to the counselors, Marti, library staff, and administration to helping  meet and greet all of our visitors. Many of our speakers were SUHi alumni so they were super happy to be “home”!







THANK YOU to all the teachers and support staff who were great hosts in the classrooms. Thanks for your flexibility with changes in speakers and venues, and even working around no-show speakers.  One of the presenters came up to me and said we have the nicest staff. He was impressed with everyone’s friendliness and smiles. He says he senses everyone at SUHi loves their job and loves being here!


 







THANK YOU to the custodial team who helped with all the set up, break down, and making sure SUHi was ready to receive our guests!

THANK YOU to Javier a.k.a. “the IT guy” for helping us be techie ready for all the power points and videos shown on Friday! The speakers were impressed with the smart boards in the new building!

THANK YOU to Link Crew and the YMCA peer leaders for their help in escorting our speakers around campus!

THANK YOU to the counseling center interns, Zorayda and Lelycia, for set-up for the Career Fair in the new gym. It was definitely a learning experience for them! Great work ladies!
