Junior Legislator Program – Summer 2017
Who should apply to become a Junior Legislator?
We look for students who want to make a positive difference in our community. Junior Legislators will learn about the different facets of State Government, get hands-on experience as team members for an Assemblymember, meet community leaders and elected officials, work together to propose their own piece of legislation, build a track record of civic engagement and community service that can be included in resumes and applications (both for college and employment), and receive a Certificate of Recognition upon completion of the program.
What are the requirements to become a Junior Legislator?
· High School Student entering Junior or Senior Year (Class of 2018 or 2019) or recent Graduate
· Must be a team player, self-starter and have interest in community empowerment & state government
· Must commit to program dates:
o First Week: Tuesday, June 27 – Friday, June 30, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
o Second Week: Wednesday, July 5 – Friday, July 7, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
o Community Service Day: Saturday, July 8, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
o Final Week: Tuesday, July 11 – Friday, July 14, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
o Presentation & Award Ceremony: July 14, 6 p.m.
o A maximum of only 2 absences will be permitted.
How do I apply?
Fill out the application, and submit it with your transcript, writing sample, and a reference to Francine Maigue, at Francine.Maigue@asm.ca.gov or fax (619) 338-8099. After review, an interview appointment may be scheduled. Your application must be received by 5:00 p.m., May 1st.
Where is the 80th Assembly District?
California’s 80th Assembly District is comprised of portions of Chula Vista and National City, as well as communities in the City of San Diego, including, but not limited to, City Heights, Paradise Hills, Barrio Logan, Golden Hill, Sherman Heights, Logan Heights, Otay Mesa, Nestor, and San Ysidro. Our offices are located at the State Building - 1350 Front St., Suite 6022, San Diego, CA 92101.
