Happy College Awareness Day!!!

The last day of every month is college awareness day and this month our theme was "Getting Involved at SuHi: the importance of extracurricular activities and community service."

During lunch, the counseling center hosted a mini community service fair where students had the opportunity to pick up community service forms and information about upcoming community service opportunities. The Red Cross, the Arc of San Diego, and Key club were also present providing students with information on ways to get involved.

Need Community Service?

How do you get started? Call or email any of the community service opportunities you are interested in. Then say, "Hi I'm ____________ from Sweetwater High School and I'm looking for community service opportunities. Can I please speak with someone who might be able to help me?". Simple as that! Make sure you have a pen and paper to take notes down while you are on the phone! Need help, see your Social Science teacher or counselor!

How to Find the College that Fits YOU!

There are thousands of colleges and universities out there to choose from. There are schools with over 30,000 students, and some with as few as a few hundred. Some schools are located in the middle of very busy cities and some are found in the middle of the forest, surrounded by giant trees. Girls only or boys only, Europe or Central America - the choices are endless!

One of the tools to help you make the best choice is www.cappex.com.

It's super easy to use to search for the college and universities you are interested in.

Once you find the college your are interested in, everything you would want to know about the school is easily accessible!

The most revealing information is in the ADMISSIONS tab on the left side of the screen. Once in the ADMISSIONS page of the school, take a look at the ADMISSIONS SCATTERGRAM to see your chances of gaining admissions to that particular school.

Along the left side of the graph, you can locate your GPA. Along the bottom of the graph, you can see the SAT/ACT you should have to meet admissions. Green and blue dots are students who were accepted. Red are those who were denied admissions.

Creating an account in Cappex.com and entering your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and college preferences allows the website to cater the searches to you specifically. 

Cappex.com is a great tool to determine whether the college or university you are applying to is a good fit!

My name is Kimberly McGee, and I am a volunteer with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. On Saturday, October 19th, the San Diego Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host its annual 5k Out of the Darkness Community Walk at Embarcadero Marina Park North (Seaport Village).

We invite your school to join us as we walk to break the stigma, to honor loved ones, and to spread the message that suicide IS preventable. We have mailed you a packet with materials that you can copy, post and distribute to your students, club advisors, and fellow faculty members. We are also willing to host a booth or speaking event to talk to your students and or faculty about what the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention does as an organization.

Everyone is welcome and registration is open now at www.outofthedarkness.org. Participants may register as an individual or you can create a school team! It's completely free! The fundraising opportunity is optional, but very easy! Walkers can fundraise by asking family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to support. You can also host fundraising events at your school. Community service hours will be given to those students who walk and/or volunteer the day of the event.

This is a great way for your school community to get involved with a great organization and make a difference. I've seen firsthand the impact that this event has on the youth here and it's amazing. I hope to see you at the walk.

Open your Safari (or other web browser) and go to thehub.sweetwaterschools.net

1. Enter your sweetwaterschools.net e-mail address

2. From the drop down - choose Student under type of user

When you click submit, it takes you to a page that asks you for your house number or the number part of your home address (as in the 123 of 123 Main Street).

You will get a new temporary password that you can use to log in. Once you have logged in, you will be asked to choose a password of your own.

Horatio Alger Scholarship

There is a potential to receive up to $20,000. Students may apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.
Eligibility:
· High school seniors enrolling in a U.S. four-year university in Fall 2014 (students may start at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)
· Involved in co-curricular and community service activities
· Demonstrate financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross income)
· Minimum 2.0 GPA
· United States citizen

Gates Millennium Scholars Program 2014
