Empowerment and Development for Girls in Engineering

EDGE, Empowerment and Development for Girls in Engineering, is a year-long program catered to 9-12th graders interested in pursuing an engineering degree. Our mission is to encourage more high school girls to consider STEM-related careers in order to bridge the gender gap in engineering fields. This program will provide opportunities to network with women in engineering and computer science fields at UCSD, as well as provide various workshops and events to foster interest in a wide variety of STEM fields.

This is the third year of this program, and we would really appreciate help recruiting passionate and driven students. Attached is the flyer for our program, and we would love for you to send it to anyone who may be interested.

Applications for the 2022-2023 school year are now open, and students may apply through this form. The application deadline is September 30, 2022, at 11:59 pm.

If you have any questions about the EDGE program, please contact us at edge.ucsd@gmail.com or visit https://edgeucsd.wixsite.com/edge

SUHi Counseling Parent Chats

Thank you to all the parents and staff who attended our SUHi Counseling Parent Chats today.

Here is the presentation and video. Please excuse the technical issues with the sounds in the first half of the presentation.

Counselor/Parent Chats Q & A   Sept. 7, 2022

How to start community service, what to do, what’s required, what’s acceptable?

Students can visit http://suhicounseling.com/ ‘Community Service’ where they can find local options of approved non-profit organizations and community service verification forms. Please have the students complete the community service form before the service is completed (eg. social science teacher signature needed).Google classroom also has community service opportunity announcements. The school site does not often have those opportunities for community service but it depends on the activity.

· Is there tutoring for AP classes? If you fail the AP classes (12th) will they not graduate?

We do have tutoring available for each subject depending on the class. We encourage the students to reach out to the teacher first. It’s preferable that the student does not fail the course but they are at risk of not graduating if it’s a required course. If the student has applied to a four year university their college acceptance may be rescinded.

Is community service still required because of the pandemic?

For the class of 2023 it is not required. For the class of 2024 it’s 15 hours. As of today, freshmen and sophomores do need the 30 hours but the district will continue to update the information. The 30 hours are for the entire 4 years, throughout high school.

Does my daughter need to make an appointment with the counselor even though she has good grades?

If you are a senior it’s probably a good idea to make an appointment but it’s a personal decision.

Be Well Red Devils Wellness Newsletter (September 2022)

 Greetings Red Devils,

The counseling department has decided to take a slightly different approach this year when it comes to sharing health and wellness information. In years past the SUHi community received a weekly Wellness Wednesday message that was sent to all students, parents and staff. This year the counseling department will instead send out a monthly newsletter that will contain an array of information, resources, links, pictures, advice, etc. that is all related to health and wellness.

Even though, our new Be Well Red Devils Newsletter will come from our counseling department, we are always open to collaborating with any group on campus who would like to contribute a wellness message, resource, or idea to the newsletter.

If you have a questions or would like to provide feedback in regard to our wellness newsletter, please feel free to email me at marco.garcia@sweetwaterschools.org.
