Wellness Wednesday: Be Thankful

November kicks off the holiday season with high expectations for a cozy and festive time of year.

But what about those who just feel lost or overwhelmed or down at this time of year?

Research (and common sense) suggests that one aspect of the Thanksgiving season can actually lift the spirits, and it's built right into the holiday — expressing gratitude.

Read more here:

Self Care:
Be thankful for happy memories. Scroll through pictures on your cell phone and appreciate the people and places you’ve had memorable times.

Kindness Challenge:
Appreciate the little things and show it. The simple words "thank you" goes a long way.

Wellness Wednesday: Be Present

Happy Wellness Wednesday.

There are many ways to bring self-care and mindfulness into your daily life, even when you don’t have a chance to sit down in a quiet place. We call this the “ART” of being present.

Activities. Bring mindfulness into the activities you do and love, like drawing, running, biking, journaling.

Routines. Chose one of your daily routines and bring mindfulness to it: folding clothes, washing dishes, vacuuming, walking to work, eating lunch.

Triggers. We all have things that set us off: snarky emails, annoying colleagues, mindless drivers. Choose one and decide to replace your angry reaction with the flash of being present.

Wellness Wednesday: Inspire Your Hope

Happy Wellness Wednesday!

Feeling good about the future is important for our happiness. Although much of the future is unknown right now, you do have control over some aspects of your life, like creating goals for yourself.

We all need goals to motivate us and these need to be challenging enough to excite us and keep us going every day.

Choosing ambitious but realistic goals gives our lives direction and brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we achieve them.

How to get started? Here is a great guide to create your wellness vision and goal setting.

Self-Care Tip:

Set goals that are SMART:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-Bound

Kindness Challenge:

Sometimes we are confronted with negative comments. You don’t have to agree but you can validate that person’s feelings. Help them find the positive in the situation. Ask them “I understand how you feel but let’s talk about what IS working right now.”

Application Season is Upon Us!

College Season (Part 1- 4-year Institutions)

Application Season is Upon Us!
The Californian State University (CSU) system and the University of California (UC) system have opened their application process for seniors! Over the years many of our SUHi seniors who have applied to a 4-year university have applied to these two systems.

Seniors who have followed the A-G eligibility requirements criteria can now begin applying to the CSU(‘s)/UC(‘s) of your choice.

*Make sure you have your transcript in front of you when applying.*

CSU Systemwww2.calstate.edu/apply/freshman (Deadline- Dec 4)
UC Systemadmission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/applying-as-a-freshman/ (Deadline- Nov 30)

Seniors interested in other 4-year institutions should research that institution’s particular admissions deadlines. For example, if you will be applying to the University of San Diego (USD), their application is due December 15.

Seniors interested in applying to community colleges, stay tuned for upcoming information.

Juniors, Sophomore, and Freshman- seniors applying to these colleges have worked hard over the years for A-G eligibility. If this is your path, plan now and continue to work hard.

Look out for more information on College and Career Awareness!

University of California for You/UC for Everyone

UC is hosting two more virtual systemwide events for students and families.

There is no fee, and each event has a maximum capacity of 3,000 attendees.

The remaining UC for You event is intended to help students and families who will be applying this fall get to know the nine undergraduate campuses. This event is an excellent opportunity to ask questions about admission selection, majors, pre-professional programs and more.

October 17, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Non-resident/International students

The UC for Everyone: UC wants You! final event is for students and their families who are considering UC in future years.

October 24, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.- Students, parents, UC faculty and staff will share their experiences and insight on opportunities and options for students in the African-American, Native American, and ChicanX/LatinX communities on our campuses. The session will end with a live Q&A. This session is intended for students and their parents interested in learning about how individual UC campus' academic and affinity resource centers support and strengthen the history, culture and well-being of students of color.

Please email ucforyou@ucop.edu for more information. Registration is now open for both events!
