Solar Young Women’s Academy (SYWA)

This program has been on our campus going on eight years now.

Solar Turbines spends about $70,000 of their own money to mentor, train and provide valuable job related resources, such as resume writing and mock interviews, to the girls who participate. Young ladies who complete the program have the opportunity to earn a paid internship straight out of high school.

We have quite a few alumni who still work for Solar and are working on engineering degrees with the support they’ve received from the company. The MESA program (Math Engineering Science Achievement) at SDSU also meets bi-weekly with the ladies to support their technical and soft skills. This is NOT just for our 4.0+ college bound students, in fact, Solar loves working with young ladies who perhaps are not 100% sure about their post high school plans and wants to help them on their journey.

Wellness Wednesday: I Believe In You

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

Today, I want to remind you that I believe in YOU! And I want you to believe in YOU!

Believing in yourself means having confidence in your own abilities. It means being able to trust yourself to do what you say you'll do and knowing that those efforts will result in the desired outcomes. That means that believing in yourself comes from a mixture of several key psychological experiences—experiences like self-worth, self-confidence, self-trust, autonomy, and environmental mastery. Read more here.

Self-Care Tip: When you feel like you can't do something, add the word "yet". Example: I can't get good grades yet if I study, work hard, and ask for help, I will be able to.

Kindness Challenge: Give three compliments to three different people today.

We all need someone to talk to, someone who listens, and someone who understands. Your Sweetwater High School Counselors are here for you.

Wellness Wednesday: Be Brave

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

What does it mean to be brave? Being brave is not about not being scared. Being brave is one's ability to push forward, regardless of that fear. Bravery is having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty.

When faced with a difficult situation, tell yourself  "I AM BRAVE" because YOU ARE! Often times, we have to remind ourselves that you have overcome many obstacles in the past and you have shown your bravery time and time again. You are brave.

Self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. In order for our students, parents, and staff to be the best they can be for each other, they have to take care of themselves first.

Self-Care Tip: Remember, change is not always bad. Things can change for the better.

Kindness is very important in creating a sense of community and belonging. One act of small kindness can release an enormous chain of positive events. It is important for students, parents, and staff to feel we are a part of the same community, working towards the same goal of mental wellness.

Kindness Challenge: Treat everyone with kindness today, most especially yourself.

We all need someone to talk to, someone who listens, and someone who understands. Your Sweetwater High School Counselors are here for you. We are just an email, video chat, or phone call away.

Wellness Wednesday: Be Happy

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

We're now in the full swing of things here at Sweetwater High. We all have good days and bad days. It is inevitable. But it is up to us whether we choose to let the bad day get the best of us or not. As Red Devil Review reminds us each time, "Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours!".

Kindness Challenge: Make eye contact and smile to as many people as you can today.

Self-Care Tip: Ask yourself, what will matter a year from now? Focus on that.

Wellness Wednesday: Motivation

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

Today's message is all about motivation. What is motivation? Motivation is the desire to act in service of a goal. It's the crucial element in setting and attaining our objectives.

Sometimes it is challenging to get motivated. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to figure out what works for you.

1) What are my reasons for wanting to achieve this goal?
2) What steps do I need to take to move closer to my goal?
3) What stops or reduces my motivation?
4) How can I overcome these obstacles?
5) What habits can I create to increase my motivation?

For this school year, we decided to include a positive affirmation in our weekly Wellness Wednesday messages. We are our own first cheerleader, our own "hype person". We have to believe in ourselves first. Take care of ourselves first. Praise ourselves first. Doing so allows us to radiate that positivity to others.

Self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. In order for our students, parents, and staff to be the best they can be for each other, they have to take care of themselves first.

Self-Care Tip: Write down your top three goals this month. Write them down somewhere you can see each day.

Kindness is very important in creating a sense of community and belonging. One act of small kindness can release an enormous chain of positive events. It is important for students, parents, and staff to feel we are a part of the same community, working towards the same goal of mental wellness.

Kindness Challenge: Make a plan to connect with a friend and do something fun.

We all need someone to talk to, someone who listens, and someone who understands. Your Sweetwater High School Counselors are here for you. We are just an email, video chat, or phone call away.
