Wellness Wednesday: Focus on What you CAN Control

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

Today, we are reminded to focus on what we can control. Letting go of the concept that you can control and suppress difficult thoughts and feelings gives you more energy to pay attention to them. This is something we can control.

It is how we respond to our thoughts and feelings which we do have agency over. This involves taking the time to be mindful of how our thoughts and feelings are influencing us and take steps to alter this track.

You can read more here.

Self-Care: Look for reasons to be hopeful even when times are tough.

Kindness Challenge: Connect with someone near you. Share a smile. Start a chat.

The Sweetwater High Counseling Team would like to say thank you all for your continued support and collaboration. It is our pleasure to work with the SUHi community. Please view our National School Counseling messages here.

Because YOU play the most important role at our school in keeping our campus safe, don't forget if you see something, say something

Because YELLOW stands for happiness, positivity, energy, optimism, and joy, we are asking for our campus community to wear YELLOW on Wednesdays to help promote our Wellness Wednesday efforts.

We all need someone to talk to, someone who listens, and someone who understands. Your Sweetwater High School Counselors are here for you. Click here to complete the SUHi Wellness Check-In. Your counselor will reach out to you 😀

Wellness Wednesday: Be Solution-Oriented

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

Today, let's make a commitment to be solution-oriented. Solutions oriented people choose to focus on solutions, rather than choosing to focus on the problems.

Ask yourself:

  • What choice will help me meet my goals?
  • Which decision will be the best for all involved?
  • Who or what can help me reach a solution?

Self-Care Tip: Notice when you are being hard on yourself. Show yourself some love.

Kindness Challenge: Reach out to someone who may be feeling lonely today.

The Sweetwater High Counseling Team would like to say thank you all for your continued support and collaboration. It is our pleasure to work with the SUHi community. Please view our National School Counseling messages here.

National School Counseling Week 2022 from Your SUHi Counselors

Today is the first day of National School Counseling Week.

The theme of this year’s week is “Better Together.” To help support your success, I often collaborate with other school staff, such as our school psychologist, school social worker and school nurse.

We are all here for you, working together to serve your needs as you navigate school and life. Just like I do, you often work in teams to achieve a common goal. “Little Women” author Louisa May Alcott said, “It takes two flints to make a fire.”

You’ve probably also heard the phrase “two heads are better than one.” Look around, how are you working in teams today? Are you collaborating on school projects, helping a friend or playing a sport? We are so much stronger together – and, sometimes, you encounter work that requires more than one person to complete.

As your school counselor, I’m here to help you build your teamwork skills so you can be successful in groups both big and small. If you’re struggling with teamwork, come see me, and let’s talk about how you can develop these skills. I work on my teamwork skills every day. Have a great Monday!

Wellness Wednesday: Self-Acceptance

Happy Wellness Wednesday Red Devils!

“[Self-acceptance is] an individual’s acceptance of all of his/her attributes, positive or negative.”

This definition emphasizes the importance of accepting all facets of the self. It’s not enough to simply embrace the good, valuable, or positive about yourself; to embody true self-acceptance, you must also embrace the less desirable, the negative, and the ugly parts of yourself.

If you’re thinking that accepting all the negative aspects of yourself sounds difficult—you’re not wrong! It’s not easy to accept the things that we desperately want to change about ourselves; however—counterintuitively—it is only by truly accepting ourselves that we can even begin the process of meaningful self-improvement.

In other words, we must first acknowledge that we have undesirable traits and habits before we start off on our journey to improvement.

Self-Care Tip: Take a break during your usual routine. Go outside and take a walk for a few minutes.

Kindness Challenge: Send a handwritten note to someone you care about.
