Karangalan is a Tagalog word that means, “pride, dignity, and honor. The Karangalan Scholarship, sponsored by the friends and family of the Filipino educators of the Sweetwater Union High School District, will be awarded to outstanding Filipino American senior students in the Sweetwater Union High School District who have demonstrated excellence in academics and community involvement.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Be a high school senior of Filipino/Filipino-American descent enrolled in the Sweetwater Union High School District.
Have a minimum 3.0 college weighted GPA
Have applied to a 4 year college/university as a full-time student
Scholarship recipients will be selected according to the following criteria:
1. Academic achievement 30%
2. Leadership, Extracurricular & community involvement
activities 25%
3. 2 letters of recommendation
(One letter must be from an educator, the other letter from a community member not related to the applicant.) 25%
4. Written essay 20%
The scholarship awards will range from $200 to $500. Applicants must submit a complete application, a typed essay, two letters of recommendation, and an official transcript, all postmarked by April 11, 2014. Applications will be screened by the Scholarship Committee. Finalists will be notified and awarded at their school sites respective awards ceremony.
