Celebrate My Drive: Keeping Teen Drivers Safe and Alive

First, the not-so-good news: More teens die from car crashes than any other cause. And the first year of driving is the most dangerous.

The good news: There’s something we all can do about it. And it involves a celebration!

That’s what Celebrate My Drive is about – celebrating this big, new life of freedom that comes with a driver’s license. Part of that life means making smart choices behind the wheel, which is why we’re spreading the message of 2N2® – 2 eyes on the road, 2 hands on the wheel. It’s a simple habit that can reduce distracted driving and help new drivers build confidence on the road.

This party even gives you and your high school a chance at some pretty sweet prizes - like a $100,000 or $25,000 Grant for your high school, and maybe even one of two Grand Prize concerts featuring GRAMMY® Nominated The Band Perry.

Share this logo on your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Make sure you use the hashtag #CelebrateMyDrive and #SUHILives! Get all your friends and family to pledge to be a safe driver by visiting CelebrateMyDrive.com and choosing Sweetwater High!!

Top Five Reminders for Freshman Applicants to the University of California (UC) campuses

1. Send official ACT, SAT and TOEFL scores to just one UC campus: UC will share them with all campuses to which you applied.

2. December Examination Dates (SAT/ACT) are acceptable even though the application is due by November 30th.

Indicate your Dec. 2014 planned test date(s) on the admission application; be sure to request that the official scores be sent to one UC campus.3. Do not send transcripts/academic records; UC will request them if they are needed during the review process.

4. Do not send letters of recommendation; UC does not require them or read them unless requested.

5. After submitting your application, you can log in to your application to review and, if necessary, change your telephone number, e-mail, mailing address or report new SAT, ACT, TOEFL, or International Exam Scores. Minor changes to your activities, awards, volunteer work, employment or personal statement are unlikely to have an impact on your admission decision. However, if you have significant updates in any of these areas, you may notify the UC Application Center at ucinfo@applyucsupport.net.

2015 Leadership Conference for High School Students Information

2015 Leadership Conference for High School Students Information

AT-A-GLANCE CONFERENCE DATES AND LOCATION
DATE: March 26-29, 2015
LOCATION: Sacramento, CA
DEADLINE: November 17, 2014

Background: The annual Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project (APYLP) conference provides a select group of 50 Asian and Pacific Islander seniors and juniors from public, private and charter high schools throughout California with a unique opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative process, community leadership, and political activism. During the four-day, three-night conference, students will participate in a Mock Legislature at the State Capitol that includes the election of peer legislative leaders, lively debate of current issues through the introduction of legislation, and the lobbying of bills during committee hearings and the Senate floor session. Additionally, small group workshops facilitated by Asian Pacific legislative staff, community activists, and business leaders will assist students in developing their leadership and public speaking skills, enhance their cultural awareness and identity, and explore the richness and diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander communities in California.

Who Should Apply: Although any California junior or senior year high school student may apply, APYLP strongly encourages applications from Asian and Pacific Islander youth who have some leadership experience and especially from students who show leadership potential, but whose participation in programs such as APYLP may have been hindered in the past by economic, geographic, language, or other factors. The conference program is designed specifically for Asian and Pacific Islander youth to learn more about themselves, issues of importance to their communities, and how to empower their leadership potential through the political process, public service and community service. Participants in past conferences have been representative of the rich cultural, racial, multiracial, linguistic, and socio-economic diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander communities from urban, suburban and rural areas throughout California.
Transportation, Room & Board: There is no cost to students accepted to the high school leadership conference. Through its fundraising efforts and generous sponsorships, APYLP pays all costs for travel, lodging, meals, and conference materials for all students selected to participate in the conference. The high school program is a supervised activity with volunteer advisors assigned to each student throughout the program.
Instructions for Applicants: The simple four-page application is available in both online and printable formats. Printable applications can be downloaded at our website and once completed, must be returned by U.S. mail only. Online applications can be accessed at our website and must be submitted online. Applications must be postmarked or submitted online no later than November 17, 2014, so don’t delay and apply now!
All information and fields on the application must be completed. Applicants should write thoughtful and informative responses to each question. The Selection & Outreach Committee will carefully review all applications to select the 50 students and a few alternates who will be invited to participate in the 2015 high school conference in Sacramento.
Student notification will begin on: February 1, 2015.

-Ms. Luansing

Hi Ms. Chavez-Casas,
Its Pedro Alemán. Everything is going great as it is now my second year in college!!! I have been meaning to contact you, because my school is starting a new program for multi-cultural students, mainly from a low-income community, who are interested in applying to my school or who are thinking about college. It is called Pathways to PC and it is going to be on November 4th. It is a one day event where high school seniors can see what is it like to attend classes here at my school, and also have Financial Aid sessions along with descriptions of scholarships my school offers for accepted multi-cultural students.

I know that it is a big commitment, and that it is far away, but my school will give some vouchers for students to fly into Providence. I was thinking of hopefully bringing 1 or 2 maybe 3 students to my school to come check it out. This is an opportunity that is once in a lifetime, and I know that my school has changed my life dramatically and will impact a SUHi Red Devil!!!! If you have any questions or would like to have more information, please please don't hesitate to contact the coordinator in charge of this event. Her name is Karen Vargas and her e-mail is kvargas1@providence.edu, and she would gladly answer any questions you have. Here is a link for more information!!!! We need more California, especially National City, kids here!!!!
