A Message from Mr. Garcia for #NSCW17

National School Counseling Week 2017, "School Counseling: Helping Students Realize Their Potential," will be celebrated from Feb. 6-10, 2017, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

The Role of the School Counselor
Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. Learn more about The Role of the School Counselor. Or download the parent resource, Who Are School Counselors? See the list of appropriate and inappropriate duties for school counselors.

The American School Counselor Association recommends a counselor to student ratio of 250:1. Imagine what SUHi school counselors could do with their students if they had that kind of ratio. Instead they work hard every day with a ratio much closer to 360:1 Your SUHi School Counselors do their best to work for your students every day. Please take a moment to recognize them with a simple thank you or kind word this week.

In her final speech as FLOTUS, Michelle Obama stood, flanked by 50 school counselors, to recognize the 2017 School Counselor of the Year. She heralded School Counselors as "heroes" who help guide students nationwide to prosperous futures. Her message, found here, gives credit to educators, especially school counselors, in preparing our students for their future.

The theme for National School Counseling Week 2017 is “Helping Students Realize Their Potential.”

Here is Mr. Garcia, school counselor, sharing how he can help YOU reach your potential.
