Career Day - THANK YOU!

On behalf of the SUHi Counseling Team, I’d like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to our entire staff for helping with Friday’s Career Day!

THANK YOU to our dozens of career speakers who came to meet with our students. We had such a great group of people participate! Having met all of our speakers, our students have had an invaluable experience in learning more about their career interests. Seeing students interact and ask lots questions of the professionals was so rewarding to our counseling team. We look forward to working with you all again in the future! During the registration and reception in the morning, it was a bit overwhelming having over 80 career speakers in the library. Lots of suits and ties, doctor scrubs, military uniforms, and more! 

THANK YOU to the counselors, Marti, library staff, and administration to helping  meet and greet all of our visitors. Many of our speakers were SUHi alumni so they were super happy to be “home”!

THANK YOU to all the teachers and support staff who were great hosts in the classrooms. Thanks for your flexibility with changes in speakers and venues, and even working around no-show speakers.  One of the presenters came up to me and said we have the nicest staff. He was impressed with everyone’s friendliness and smiles. He says he senses everyone at SUHi loves their job and loves being here!

 

THANK YOU to the custodial team who helped with all the set up, break down, and making sure SUHi was ready to receive our guests!

THANK YOU to Javier a.k.a. “the IT guy” for helping us be techie ready for all the power points and videos shown on Friday! The speakers were impressed with the smart boards in the new building!

THANK YOU to Link Crew and the YMCA peer leaders for their help in escorting our speakers around campus!

THANK YOU to the counseling center interns, Zorayda and Lelycia, for set-up for the Career Fair in the new gym. It was definitely a learning experience for them! Great work ladies!

Scholarships for Students in Military Families or Planning a Military Career

My name is Jean Kim, and I chair the Scholarship committee for the Naval Officers' Spouses' Club (NOSC) this year. I wanted to let you know we are currently accepting applications for local military dependents planning to attend college full-time next year.

NOSC is a non-profit organization that raises funds through our two Sand Dollar Shops (located at NMCSD & NASNI) to give out scholarships and charitable grants during the spring. Graduating high school seniors and spouses of past and present active duty military members who will be attending a full-time college or university are eligible to apply for a scholarship. The deadline this year is Monday, March 17, 2014.

REWARDING COLLEGE DREAMS SCHOLARSHIP 2014

NOTE: This scholarship is for current high school seniors.  Sponsored by: College Access Foundation of California  San Diego and Imperial Counties Cal-SOAP has received funds to award scholarships.
Award	Scholarships will be awarded to Cal-SOAP seniors from the listed high schools in San Diego.Students must:
$1,000	Enroll full-time and attend a Community College and complete an Education Plan with the intent of transferring to a 4-year college or university.
$2,000	Enroll full-time and attend a 4-year college or university (public or private) pursuing a Bachelor�s Degree.
All students who meet the following criteria are eligible to participate:  Must be a high school senior attending one of the high schools listed on the following page and must be served by Cal-SOAP or one of its college preparation partner programs (AVID, GEAR UP, EAOP, Upward Bound, ETS, Compact for Success, etc). Must apply and be admitted to a community college to be considered for the Community College Award, or must apply and be admitted to a university to be considered for the University Award. Must have a weighted GPA of 2.0 or better for the Community College Award or have a weighted GPA of 2.8 or better for the University Award. Write a 500 word essay on one of the two provided prompts. Complete the 2014-2015 FAFSA and GPA Verification Form by the March 2nd deadline. Check with your high school registrar to see if they submit the GPA verification for you. Provide a photocopy or printout of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by FAFSA. Must submit a copy of your financial aid award letter or statement for the 2014-2015 school year (as provided by your college/university) by August 1, 2014. Scholarship applications must be postmarked or submitted no later than Friday, MARCH 14, 2014.Students are to mail or drop off their scholarship application packets to the San Diego Cal-SOAP office.  Students will be notified by May 1, 2014 regarding their acceptance status. The Hot Chocolate 15K/5K is seeking energetic, hardworking volunteers to assist with the Hot Chocolate Runner Expo and Race Day events. Volunteers provide key support to the thousands of participants as they “run for chocolate” and the local Ronald McDonald House chapter.

Community Service Opportunity!

My name is Jihae and I work with Zero Waste San Diego (ZWSD).  I may have contacted you or someone that has given me your email address via phone some time last month.

Currently I am in the process of looking for volunteers for an event coming up in April 27 called Earth Fair (by EarthWorks: http://www.earthdayweb.org/EarthFair.html) held in Balboa Park. 

EarthWorks has hired us to help their event get to zero waste.  I would greatly appreciate it if you can either help spread the word (via social media or any other type of networking/advertising outlet) about this event or help gather volunteers.  

We are hoping to gather at least 300 volunteers for this event. Please reply back if any questions arise.  Thank you in advance for helping us get to zero waste.

Athena Pinnacle Scholarship Applications

Athena is pleased to announce that five (5) Merit Scholarships are available to San Diego County graduating high school women:

·         Who in the 2014 school year will be attending a four-year university

·         Who plan to have a career in the sciences including math, engineering, computer science

·         Who is a U.S. Citizen with a valid social security number

Outstanding applicants will be well-rounded young women who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership in school organizations, and community involvement. Each scholarship is a minimum of $2,500 per year for two years, and is subject to renewal for two successive years after the scholarship is initially granted. The Athena San Diego Foundation has the sole and absolute discretion to renew each scholarship based upon the availability of funds for all scholarships previously awarded and to be awarded in the future.

Moreover, scholarships will be considered for renewal as long as the recipient: 1) can demonstrate that she remains enrolled in a science, math, engineering, or computer science program at a four-year university and is thereby committed to a career in the respective field; and 2) provides documentary proof of a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Annual attendance by each recipient at the Athena San Diego Pinnacle Awards is encouraged. Scholarships will be paid directly to the university in which the recipient is enrolled.

A copy of the application is attached and posted on the Athena web site at http://athenasd.org/pinnacle-scholarship/how-to-apply/.

Submissions must be made by mail (no on-line application process is provided and no e-mailed applications will be accepted).  All submissions must include the following:

·         A completed scholarship application (attached)

·         An official copy of your high school transcript

·         A letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher at your high school

The deadline for submission of your complete application packet is Monday, March 3, 2014. Please note that all documents must be postmarked on or before that date – including school transcripts.  Application packets should be mailed to:

Sweetwater Career Day 2014!

Sweetwater High's School Career Day is on February 28, 2014!

Due to the tremendous response by our community, we no longer need additional speakers.

The purpose of Career Day is to introduce students to the wide variety of career opportunities.

The day will consist of:

8:45AM to 9:30AM - Speaker Registration and Reception in the Counseling Center
9:30AM - Speakers Escorted to Classrooms
9:51AM - Career Presentations Begin in Classrooms
10:39AM to 11:58AM - Career Fair in Gym -  Career speakers will be available to answer any questions students might have about their particular career field.
