2016 San Diego Youth
Power Summit is taking place on Saturday, October 22nd, 8am to 3:30pm at
Lincoln High School.
The
Summit is a youth-led, inspirational and educational half-day event organized
by Mid-City CAN and the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial County’s youth programs
and supported by The Global Action Research Center, Access Inc., and Planned
Parenthood.
The Summit will bring awareness to the over-criminalization of
youth of color in our region and provide youth the skills to become civically engaged in their own communities.
A
core planning team comprise of youth leaders in San Diego decided that this
year’s theme will be the School-to-Prison Pipeline as a result of the urgent need to shift
economic resources back to schools instead of prisons. Through
interactive activities, speakers, music and youth-led workshops, participants
will learn about a range of issues that are channeling more youth into the
prison and detention center systems in San Diego instead of jobs, careers or
higher education opportunities. At the summit youth will have the opportunity
to experience a free concert featuring M1 from Dead Prez and
listen to our incredible keynote speakers: Jennicet Gutierrez from
FAMILIA: TQLM (Trans Queer Liberation Movement) and Nate
Howard from Movement Be.
Some
of the intersectional issues that will be discussed at the summit are:
- Food Justice
- Transportation Justice
- Environmental Justice
- Racial Justice
- Queer and Trans Youth Rights
- Immigrants’ Rights
- Reproductive Justice
- Get Out the Vote!
- Youth Organizing 101
- Restorative Justice
- and MORE!
If
you would like us to do a classroom/community presentation on this incredible
opportunity
we can
definitely come by and invite your students/community members to join us.
