Senior Presentation from Ms. Morris & the ASB - Important Dates

Wellness Wednesday: Building Connection Through Open Conversations

Happy Wellness Wednesday!

May is Mental Health Month. Today let's think about building connections with others.

During this time, you may be finding it difficult to make connections with others.

Not all connections have to be done in person. While spending time with someone face-to-face helps to create the strongest relationships, phone calls, text messaging, emails, and video chats can maintain friendships when distance or time constraints get in the way of hanging out.

If you’re struggling to figure out what to say to someone to strike up a conversation, try starting with a compliment. You can comment on a person’s outfit, tattoo, or a piece of jewelry that you like and maybe ask them where they got it. Use their response to continue the conversation, for example if they tell you they got it at a certain store, ask where that is.

Use your current situation as a topic to talk about. Maybe you’re stuck at home, or you noticed someone is wearing a shirt from a place that you’ve been. Hometown sports, local news and events, or even the weather can also get a conversation going

Wellness Wednesday: Connecting with Others

Happy Wellness Wednesday!

May is Mental Health Month.

Today, let’s think about connecting with and supporting others.

While 1 in 5 people will experience a diagnosable mental health condition in their lives, 5 out of 5 people will go through a challenging time that affects their mental health.

There are simple things that every person can say or do to help the people in their life who are struggling to get through the tough times.

Self-Care Tip & Kindness Challenge:Ask what you can do to help others or ask for help if you need it.

It can be tempting to assume what would be helpful to someone who is struggling, but it’s always better to ask them what they need from you.

If you ask and get a response like, “nothing, I’m fine,” offer up a few suggestions for things you would be willing to do (without being pushy).

For instance, you could offer to “sit” with them via zoom, facebook messenger, or facetime, and watch a movie or eat a meal together.

Here are a few more tips on how to connect and support others

Wellness Wednesday: Positive Energy #Tools2Thrive

Happy Wellness Wednesday!

May is Mental Health Month.

Today, let’s think about welcoming positive energy and eliminating toxic influences.

Certain people and situations in life can trigger us to feel badly about ourselves or engage in destructive behaviors. Identifying the toxic influences in our lives and taking steps to create boundaries or a new life without them can improve mental and physical health over time.

Self-Care Tip:
Ask yourself - What is the thing that you need to stop or get out of your life? What can you say to the toxic influence to set boundaries? What can you do and say to reinforce your boundaries or create healthy distance?

Visit here for more tips on eliminating toxic influences

Beyond Standardized Tests: Using Performance Assessment in College Admissions
Wednesday, May 27
11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

A growing number of colleges and universities are expanding the ways they evaluate student admissions applications in order to gain insight into students’ deeper learning skills, such as collaboration, problem-solving, and communication. These skills are best demonstrated through performance assessments, such as student portfolios and capstone projects, that have not traditionally been used in most college admissions processes.

This webinar will look at the outcomes of a pilot program at City University of New York (CUNY) that uses performance assessments to admit qualified applicants with scores below the threshold on college entry exams. The discussion will be based on findings from a Learning Policy Institute report on the use of these assessments for equity and access in the CUNY system.

Undocumented? Going to College? Have Questions?

Live on Instagram every Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. and Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m., Immigrants Rising will provide an opportunity for undocumented high school or transfer students to ask questions on how to apply, attend, and pay for college. Students will receive answers to education-related questions and be reassured that they do not have to give up on their academic dreams. Wellness Wednesday: Owning Your Feelings

This May is Mental Health Month and we will be highlighting #Tools2Thrive. This week's topic is owning your feelings.

When it comes to your feelings, it can be easy to get caught up in your emotions as you’re feeling them.

Most people don’t think about what emotions they are dealing with but taking the time to really identify what you’re feeling can help you to better cope with challenging situations.

It’s ok to give yourself permission to feel.

By looking for opportunity in adversity or finding ways to remember the good things in each situation, we can help ourselves to recover mentally and emotionally.

Reach out to a friend, family member, colleague/classmate, or counselor if you need to talk =)

More information on Mental Health Month:
https://www.mhanational.org/mental-health-month

Self Care Tip:Try journaling. Each night write down at least 3 feelings you had over the course of the day and what caused them. It doesn’t need to be a “Dear Diary” kind of thing. Just a few sentences or bullet points to help you practice being comfortable with identifying and expressing your emotions. Here are more tips on how to own your feelings:
https://mhanational.org/sites/default/files/Handout%20-%20Owning%20Your%20Feelings.pdf
Kindness Challenge:Send someone you care about a nice text right before you go to bed.
