October Scholarship Bulletin

Counselor Chat - September 15, 2021

Thank you to our parents for joining us for our first Counselor Chats for this school year.

Here is the video recording with the Question and Answer responses below.

Counselor/Parent Chats Q & A

How can I schedule an appointment with my child’s counselor?

The best way is to send an email to your student’s counselor to set up an appointment. You can find all of the counselor’s contact info here:
https://suhicounseling.blogspot.com/p/contact-us.html

Are SAT Testing and PSAT still being offered?
We will be offering PSAT to 10th and 11th grade students on October 13th. More information from our administration will be sent out closer to the date.

In regards to SAT’s, we would recommend your student check with the school they plan on applying to as some schools require it for admissions but others do not.

Can a student still request a schedule change?

Schedule changes were at the start of the semester. At this point in the semester, we are not recommending any more schedule changes, but parents and students can still speak to their counselor to see other interventions/supports that can be offered.

What is the counseling center phone number?

619-474-9720

Do you offer groups/workshops for students about topics such as drugs, bullying, etc.

Our school is working on partnering with McAlister to offer workshops on drug prevention through Saturday School.

The counseling center will also be starting an anxiety small group after the Fall break

School wide we are collectively looking into ways to support students with social/emotional development due to the pandemic.

Do students still need to do community service?

For the graduating class of 2022, the 30 hours of community service are not required.

For the classes of 2023 and 2024, this graduation requirement is a minimum of 15 hours. These required hours will be re-evaluated as needed once school sites are fully reopened.

Are the community service hours per year?

No, the hours are an accumulated total for all 4 years.

When do the students need to start their community service hours?

Students can start at any point but we always recommend student’s start sooner than later. Total hours are due by May of their senior year. Please see more information on Community Service Resources here: https://suhicounseling.blogspot.com/p/community-service.html

My student’s counselor only speaks English and I am a Spanish Speaker. What options do I have to navigate the language barrier or can I speak to another counselor?

Please request Spanish translation when scheduling an appointment and we will make sure to coordinate. Counselors all work together to assist in language translation but your child’s assigned counselor does not change.

When will parents receive communication about their student’s progress on requirements to graduate?

Parents with seniors will receive notification of their student’s progress via email by Friday (9/17/21)

Can students complete their community service hours at their place of worship/church?

Some activities may count and others will not. Students are required to fill out a community service form where step 1 is pre-approval. The student should communicate with their social science/history teacher to discuss their community service plan, prior to activity to avoid their activity not counting. You can access the form here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4n__mn-IA4ObUFnYnI5bHlLWTA/view?usp=sharing

My child had a class change and submitted their assignments but the teacher did not get to grade them prior to the progress report. Will those grades be updated once the assignments are graded?

Progress reports are just designed to give an update. Once teachers have a chance to grade all assignments, teachers typically update their grades on Jupiter. If you have specific questions, please reach out to the teacher of the class in question. Our next progress report comes out on October 29th, 2021

I have a hard time with technology. Is there a way for me to get a paper copy of the community service form?

Students/parents can pick up a paper copy of the community service form at the front window of the counseling center or can request one from their social science/history teacher.

My student was quarantined due to COVID. He was out for 14 days. Upon his return, he was given all of the work he missed. He was able to make up the work but what is being done to help students who are out due to COVID?

Teachers were instructed to create a google classroom for students that may need to be out for several days. Students have been instructed to check their google classroom while at home to complete work. We will take this concern to our admin team to ensure that this is being communicated to students.

Practicing gratitude — such as with a diary — can increase positive emotions and lower the risk of depressive symptoms that can lead to suicide. While some argue it "can't fix everything," gratitude is a low-cost, high-impact way to maintain your mental health.

Empowerment and Development for Girls in Engineering

Society of Women Engineers and Women in Computing at UC San Diego is promoting their outreach program. EDGE, Empowerment and Development for Girls in Engineering, which is a year long program catered to 9-12 graders interested in pursuing an engineering degree.

Our mission is to encourage more high school girls to consider STEM related careers in order to bridge the gender gap in engineering fields. This program will provide opportunities to network with women in engineering and computer science fields at UCSD, as well as provide various workshops and events to foster interest in a wide variety of STEM fields.

This is the second year of this program, and we would really appreciate help recruiting passionate and driven students. Attached is the flyer for our program, and we would love for you to send it to anyone who may be interested.

Applications for the 2021-2022 school year are now open, and students may apply through this form. The application deadline is September 23, 2021 at 11:59 pm.

If you have any questions about the EDGE program, please reach out to us at edge.ucsd@gmail.com or visit https://edgeucsd.wixsite.com/edge

National Suicide Prevention Week 2021

This week is National Suicide Prevention Week 2021

The theme for this week is: “Supportive Transitions: Reconnect, Reenter, and Rebuild”

Transitions can be conceptualized as an event or series of events that cause fundamental changes in the fabric of daily life – what people do, where they do it, and with whom.

Expected or unexpected, welcomed or unwelcome – transitions can be unsettling and stressful, impacting our mental health and increasing risk factors for suicide.

Major life changes, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, job loss and relocation, can be environmental risk factors for suicide. Protective factors such as positive coping skills, resilience, and connectedness to others can help navigate transitions and reduce some of their impact on mental health and suicide risk.

As we reenter and rebuild the fabrics of our daily life that were so fundamentally disrupted, reconnecting with supportive relationships and practicing positive coping skills is essential for our emotional well-being.

The possibilities are endless. Yet, intentions alone are not enough. They must be coupled with thoughtful planning and actions.

Self-Care Tip: Notice the small things you do well today and tell yourself “good job”.
